Painted Black is by Sunday Silence, pictured at right, who died in 2002 as the most prolific stakes earning sire of all time. He was 1989 US Horse of the Year, the winner of $US4,968,554 and nine races, including the Gr 1 Kentucky Derby, and the Gr 1 Breeders' Cup Classic. He is the sire of 169 Stakes Winners including 44 Group 1 winners, and was Champion Japan Sire in consecutive years from 1995 to 2007, and Champion Japan Sire of two-year-olds in 1994 and 1995, and from 1997 to 2005. He was Champion Japan Sire of Broodmares in 2007.

His influence extends beyond Japan when in 2006, he quinellaed the Melbourne Cup race as both grandsire and damsire of Delta Blues and Pop Rock.

Painted Black hails from the close up family of Sir Ivor ... sire of Sir Tristam.  His first dam, the Group 3 performed Oak Tree by Real Shadai is a half sister to Icy Google the dam of Air Jihad, champion sprinter in Japan. Oak Tree has produced seven winners from eight foals including stakes placed Gimme Shelter. Her dam Shadai Ivor, by 10-time champion Japan sire Northern Taste, was the winner of the Group 1 Japan Oaks. She is also the dam of the champion sprinter Air Jihad. Painted Black's fourth dam, Lady Attica, is a half sister to the great Sir Ivor.
